Soraya Janus is a PhD Candidate [ABD] at Simon Fraser University’s School of Criminology - affiliated with the Centre for Forensic Research and the Research and Engagement Centre for Restorative Justice. Her research focuses on miscarriages of justice and wrongful convictions in Canada, specifically looking at vulnerable populations and issues relating to criminal justice reform and preventing future injustices. Janus is a graduate from SFU receiving her Master's Degree (2018) focusing on victimology and her Bachelor's Degree (2014). Much of Janus' current research is devoted to false confessions and delving into why an innocent person would confess to a crime they did not commit. The role of police during interviews and interrogations is an area she is currently exploring. Janus is also active in Restorative Justice and has been an Associate Board Member with VARJ since 2021. She has co-authored an article (currently under review) for the Encyclopedia of Social Justice in Education with Bloomsbury Publishing in Oxford, United Kingdom. She has been an invited guest-speaker, most notably speaking live on CBC radio with Stephen Quinn about pandemic grief and bereavement. Since 2021, Janus has worked closely with "The Social Echoes" a group she co-founded to share in our commitment to Reconciliation, engaging in meaningful learning and challenging perceptions of Indigenous history in Canada. The Social Echoes have hosted many events across British Columbia, most recently at SFU and Bowen Island during Reconciliation week. Her work with wrongful convictions and restorative justice in the context of education have been published and presented both nationally and internationally. In her free time, she can be found relaxing with her miniature Dachshund, Tilly and exploring/travelling with her husband, Lou.
